MOC renews contract with OISTAT

Deputy Minister of Culture Lee Ching-hwi renewed an agreement basing the headquarters of the International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT) in Taiwan, underscoring the government’s dedication to fostering cultural exchange.

The pact was inked by Lee and OISTAT President Aby Cohen Aug. 23 at the Kaohsiung City-based National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, also known as Weiwuying. Under the new arrangement, the organization’s headquarters will remain in Taiwan five additional years until 2030, the ministry said.

According to the MOC, the two sides unveiled three goals during the signing ceremony: to create sustainable value by implementing net-zero practices, to boost youth participation, diversity and equality in the performing arts, and to bridge the geographical divide by utilizing both physical and digital channels.

Since 2006 OISTAT has played a major role in the transformation of Taiwan theater, the MOC said, citing the organization’s part in facilitating the establishment of Weiwuying.

Taiwan’s performing artists and theatrical personnel have also gained more opportunities to showcase their talent in global events, the ministry said. In 2017 the country hosted the World Stage Design competition, in which local participants won five gold, two silver and three bronze prizes, and in the 2022 edition, domestic designers beat competitors from 34 countries to take the top prize, the MOC added.

OISTAT, established in Prague in 1968, is a nongovernmental organization with members from over 50 countries. Its mission is to stimulate the exchange of performing arts innovation and ideas across borders.
