Vice President Hsiao speaks at Asia Pacific Internet Governance Forum

2024/08/23

Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said that Taiwan would continue to utilize technology to solve social problems and establish a more comprehensive, inclusive and pioneering digital governance model.

Hsiao made the remarks while attending the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum’s opening ceremony Aug. 21 in Taipei City. She said that global internet governance has become ever more vital and added that, in addition to enhancing digital competitiveness, Taiwan has been actively collaborating with regional stakeholders to forge a free, safe and resilient digital ecosystem.

According to the vice president, Taiwan launched the Ministry of Digital Affairs in 2022 to promote digital transition through integrating the fields of information security, internet communication and telecommunications. The MODA’s responsibilities encompass Internet security, fighting fraud, and ensuring a resilient internet environment in order to enable Taiwan’s smooth connection with the world, she added.

Taiwan has continued to cultivate digital talent while making the most of the nation’s advantages in artificial intelligence and information and communications technology, Hsiao concluded.

APrIGF is the most important event on Internet public policies in the Asia-Pacific. This year’s edition runs from Aug. 21-23 and is organized by the Ministry of Digital Affairs, and the Taipei-based Taiwan Network Information Center and Taiwan Internet Governance Forum.

APrIGF was jointly initiated by Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan in 2010, with the first convention being hosted by Hong Kong. The conference attracts hundreds of representatives from the academic, governmental and industrial sectors annually, the MODA added.
