President Lai meets US congressional delegation

President Lai Ching-te said Aug. 20 that Taiwan is committed to working with the U.S. to advance prosperity and development in the region and around the world.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a U.S. congressional delegation led by Rep. Brad Wenstrup, chair of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic under the Committee on Oversight and Accountability at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
The president first thanked Wenstrup for signing a petition urging the Biden administration to include Taiwan in its first round of vaccine donations, of which four million doses subsequently helped Taiwan to weather the pandemic storm. Wenstrup also led the GOP Doctors Caucus in writing a letter to the World Health Organization calling for Taiwan’s engagement and supporting its international participation in the World Health Assembly earlier this year, he said.
Such actions are deeply appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, Lai said. Taiwan can contribute further to the global public health system, as evidenced by its timely response mechanism, open and transparent information, provision of experience and supplies to the country’s partners during the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.
Lai went on to pledge to build a stronger Taiwan by accomplishing healthy lives for all, enhanced lifelong care and strengthened global cooperation to foster international post-pandemic solidarity for future outbreaks. The president said he looks forward to deepening Taiwan-U.S. partnerships in areas spanning economics, public health, security and trade, while expressing hope that Wenstrup will facilitate the legislation of the U.S.-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act.
Following the meeting, the delegation was also received by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim. Hsiao said that people who love freedom should help each other in difficult times, adding that Taiwan-U.S. cooperation on issues spanning public health and medical care will help improve the well-being of all human beings.
