The visits of delegations from the U.S. state of Virginia-based American Legislative Exchange Council, the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Oversight and Accountability as well as Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party are welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Presidential Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the PO, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim met with ALEC members including Patricia Rucker, West Virginia state senator, Aug. 19 in Taipei City. Hsiao expressed appreciation for the council’s proposals of initiatives and resolutions in support of Taiwan, and for its 2020 decision to bestow the International Pioneer Award for Leadership on then president Tsai Ing-wen.
A U.S. group led by Rep. Brad Wenstrup, chair of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic under the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, arrived in Taiwan the same day on a three-day visit, the MOFA said. Delegation members will meet with President Lai Ching-te, Vice President Hsiao and other relevant governmental officials while attending a MOFA-hosted banquet, the ministry said, adding that they will discuss issues spanning Taiwan’s COVID-19 response mechanism, public health infrastructure establishment, plans to combat future pandemics and the country’s bid to join the World Health Organization.
A staunch supporter of Taiwan, Wenstrup has signed many joint letters in support of Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly in addition to calling on the Biden administration to donate COVID-19 vaccines to Taiwan in 2021, the MOFA said. The ministry will continue to work with the U.S. to further contribute to the international community while deepening the two sides’ close partnership, it added.
Another delegation arrived the same day from Japan: led by Takako Suzuki, member of the House of Representatives in the Diet and director of the LDP’s Youth Division, the group comprises over 70 members. The MOFA said they will meet with Lai, Hsiao, Legislative Yuan President Daniel K.Y. Han and Su Jia-chyuan, chair of the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association, during their five-day trip. The delegation will also visit the eastern county of Hualien to get a deeper understanding of the post-earthquake reconstruction and help promote the area’s revitalization, the ministry added.
