Taiwan agriculture ministry takes part in APEC food security meeting

2024/08/21

Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture Hu Jong-i led a delegation to Peru for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s 2024 Food Security Ministerial Meeting Aug. 17-18 in Trujillo to share the country’s policy measures in reducing and preventing food loss and waste.

During his remarks at the meeting, Hu spoke on the success of Taiwan’s Food and Agricultural Education Act. Enacted in 2022, the legislation aims to advance food and agricultural education, enhance citizens’ health and promote sustainable development of the agricultural sector, agricultural and fishing communities, and the environment, he said.

The deputy minister said the legislation pays special attention to instilling in the populace the idea of treasuring food and reducing waste through practices such as encouraging consumption of local agricultural products and reducing leftovers to ensure food security for all. He also brought participants up to speed on related government policies to help Taiwan’s small, medium and micro businesses prevent and reduce food loss and waste.

In recent years Taiwan has been working with other APEC members to implement cooperative projects to ensure food security in the region, according to the MOA. These include the APEC Workshop on Reducing Food Loss and Waste by Strengthening Resilience and Digitalization in APEC Food System staged by the MOA in 2023, as well as a new project in the pipeline on innovative packaging to reduce FLW, the ministry added.

The deputy minister also took advantage of the opportunity to exchange views with his counterparts from the region and reiterate Taiwan’s commitment to deepening partnerships going forward, the MOA said.
