MOFA thanks Japan, South Korea, US, Philippines for support

2024/08/20

The unwavering support for peace and stability expressed by Japan, South Korea, the U.S. and the Philippines is deeply appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Aug. 18.

The support was shown in a joint leaders’ statement on the anniversary of the Trilateral Leaders’ Summit at Camp David released Aug. 17. The three countries reiterated that they are resolved to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, remain aligned in the shared vision and stand ready to meet the world’s greatest challenges.

According to the MOFA, Indo-Pacific security is a top priority for the international community. The importance of the region and opposition to alter the status quo, were stressed in joint statements released following bilateral and multilateral meetings including the Trilateral U.S.-Japan-South Korea Indo-Pacific Dialogue, the Japan-U.S.-Philippines Summit, the EU-U.S. High-level Consultations on the Indo-Pacific and the Australia-U.S. Ministerial Consultations, the ministry said.

Two days earlier, Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique A. Manalo also emphasized the importance of stability in the Taiwan Strait while answering questions at a forum held by the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines. He urged peaceful resolution of regional disputes.

Manalo’s public support followed his comments on the joint statement released after the Philippines-U.S. Fourth 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in July, the MOFA said, adding that Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. has also recently made remarks to that effect.

The MOFA is committed to deepening cooperation with the Philippines in the values-based integral diplomacy approach, which focuses on alliances and economic and trade bonds, the ministry said, adding that Taiwan will continue to work with like-minded partners to maintain peace, stability and prosperity throughout the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific.
