Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs Deputy Minister Chen Cherng-chyi led a delegation to the 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Energy Ministerial Meeting Aug. 15-16 in Lima, Peru to share experience in renewable energy development.
During remarks at the meeting, Chen reiterated that Taiwan recognizes the importance of fair energy transition to develop net-zero emissions. As an example, Chen said that due to Taiwan’s limited land resources, the government introduced the innovative Aquavoltaics Development policy to promote a green economy and create new job opportunities.
The deputy minister said that the aforementioned government project is the reason why Taiwan is recognized as having best practice by this year’s Energy Smart Communities Initiative, adding that the policy was also highlighted by Ariadne BenAissa, Lead Shepherd of the APEC Energy Working Group, as a great example in enhancing fair energy transition.
According to the MOEA, the EMM14 was convened by Peru Minister of Energy and Mines Romulo Mucho and focused discussion on advancing energy transition, enhancing energy access for sustainable growth and developing policy and action for hydrogen development.
During the two-day event, there were report presentations by the Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre and APEC Sustainable Energy Centre, as well as the APEC Policy Guidance to Develop and Implement Low-Carbon Hydrogen Policy Frameworks in the Asia-Pacific. In addition, those present agreed to adopt the EMM14 Statement to ensure that energy transition takes place in a balanced, predictable, orderly and secure manner, among other key issues.
