MOENV stages emissions forum
2024/08/19
A forum on greenhouse gas inventories and corporate integrity was held Aug. 14 in Taipei City as part of the government’s policy goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 for sustainable national development, the Ministry of the Environment said.
Organized by the ministry and jointly opened by MOENV Minister Peng Chi-ming and Minister of Justice Cheng Ming-chien, the event involved officials and private sector representatives in discussions on related corporate practices, policy measures, legal compliance and global trends.
During his opening remarks, Peng said the MOENV is taking the implementation of greenhouse gas inventories very seriously and requiring entities on the government’s watchlist to report their emissions from the preceding year on a stipulated deadline.
Peng said such inventories need to be conducted by an MOENV-recognized institution and follow relevant government regulations to ensure accuracy. He warned that businesses that fail to disclose such information run the risk of damaging public trust, and would likely be seen by consumers as greenwashers.
Echoing Peng’s remarks, Cheng said climate change, sustainability, and corporate integrity and transparency are all major concerns for business operators, while greenhouse gas inventories are key to Taiwan’s net-zero emissions policy goal. The public and private sectors need to work hand in hand toward this end, he said, adding that the forum serves as the first step forward.
The government launched “Taiwan’s Pathway to Net-Zero Emissions in 2050” in March 2022. The blueprint includes strategies to promote energy, industrial, lifestyle and social transitions, among other policy measures.
