2024/08/19

A cooperative memorandum of understanding was inked by the Ministry of Environment’s National Environmental Research Academy and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications’ Central Weather Administration Aug. 14 in Taipei City, spotlighting the government effort to expand Taiwan’s climate change research capacities, the MOENV said.

Under the pact, the institutions will jointly utilize their resources and advance technology research and development, the MOENV said, adding that the research will focus on climate change and environmental governance as well as pollution prevention and control.

According to the MOENV, the CWA recently launched a sixth-generation supercomputer and built a GPU computing system to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence weather forecasting applications. The cooperation combines the CWA’s technical achievements with the NERA’s solid foundation in environmental research, the ministry said, adding that the facilities will also collaborate with academics and enterprises at home and abroad to apply data technology and develop high fidelity models, known as digital twin systems, for climate change adaptation.

An initiative integrating cross-field applications for climate change adaptation and risk resilience by the two institutions and other relevant ministries and agencies is also in the pipeline, the MOE said, adding that a service platform including relevant climate science information will also be provided as a foundation for drafting national policies. Such measures aim to create a low-carbon and sustainable environment for the people of Taiwan, the ministry said.
