Taiwan-US cross-border fraud combat lauded by premier

Premier Cho Jung-tai has said that the government will adhere to the rule of law and vigorously crack down on online fraud.

Cho made remarks at a press conference Aug. 9 on the results of a Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau probe into major telecommunications fraud and on the cooperation between Taiwan and the United States to crack down on cross-border online fraud.

The premier expressed gratitude to prosecutors, police, investigators, the coastguard and customs for their joint investigation and handling of the case. This cross-body cooperation enabled the government to make significant gains in combating fraud and in addition, successfully established a cooperation mechanism with the United States.

Law enforcement personnel seized 19 call centers, stolen money, modems and SIM cards used to make millions of fraudulent calls, as well as uncovering dealing in illegal virtual currencies.

The press conference also showcased the results of a crackdown on Taiwan-U.S. cross-border fraud. The two countries share values of freedom, democracy, and human rights, and have also established a successful collaborative arrangement for fraud prevention and control.

Also present at the press conference was AIT Legal Liaison Section Chief Ty Cook who said that he looked forward to the U.S. and Taiwan continuing to work together to combat criminal activities that have a detrimental impact on the United States, Taiwan and the wider international community.
