Lai hosts first meeting of climate change committee

2024/08/12

President Lai Ching-te emphasized to the National Climate Change Response Committee Aug. 8 in Taipei City that its purpose is to devise strategies that advance Taiwan’s sustainable development.

Lai announced the plan to launch the committee, one of three intended to respond to various global challenges, in June. In his opening speech at the NCCRC, the president noted that all three bodies are interdisciplinary and intergenerational, and encompass members with diverse perspectives.

This intention is reflected in the makeup of the NCCRC, Lai said. The committee’s roster includes eight ministers, one of whom, Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming, serves as executive secretary. The scope of climate governance requires joint effort across the public and private sectors, the president continued, adding that six members hail from industry.

Others on the committee are pioneers of the environmental movement from different generations, Lai said. The Presidential Office added that there are four experts from the fields of environment and sanitation, humanity, medicine and public health, and science and technology, which contributes to the overall goal of attacking climate change from all sides.

During the meeting, MOENV Minister Peng presented an analysis of the impact of climate change on Taiwan and the world, where he introduced a response policy of adaptation, disaster prevention and net-zero efforts. Taiwan Power Co. Chairman Tseng Wen-sheng then briefed the committee on the improvement of stable power supply and the reduction of electricity carbon emissions.
