Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim Aug. 8 stressed the importance of feline repopulation and pledged that Taiwan is committed to conservation of ecology and wildlife.
Hsiao made the remarks during an event at Taipei Zoo marking the launch of the Wildlife channel by Sanlih Entertainment Television Inc. and the premiere of Sanlih-produced documentary “Renaissance of Asian Wild Cats.”
The documentary focused on repopulation of Bengal tigers, clouded leopards, Taiwan and Tsushima leopard cats; and was filmed in Taiwan, India, Japan and Malaysia. It discussed the challenges to find a balance between economic development and environmental conservation faced by the countries involved, the VP added.
Hsiao went on to recall that lawmakers have actively participated in Animal Protection Act legislation, and said that public awareness of the issue continues to rise. Hsiao added that the documentary provided more relevant knowledge and laid a foundation for Taiwan’s people to protect this beautiful island and its ecological diversity.
She further expressed appreciation for those working to conserve wildlife ecology, saying that animal habitat conservation is of paramount importance when facing climate change and global warming. Hsiao also wished everyone a happy International Cat Day, which is observed Aug. 8.
