The Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Bureau of Industrial Parks hosted a seminar on low-carbon transition to a green economy Aug. 5 in Taichung City’s software park, underscoring the government’s dedication to facilitating local enterprises to advance sustainability.
Faced with the severe challenges of climate change and the imposition of carbon fees, the green economy is an important direction for sustainable business development. The forum explored how to use green financial resources to support dual-axis transformation and promote low-carbon economic models, the MOEA said.
Over 250 representatives from academia, government and industry participated in the seminar, which focused on the reduction of carbon emissions and improving resource efficiency. Discussions emphasized the importance of corporate integrity and labor rights while providing companies with substantive strategies and resource support to deal with climate change.
Speaking at the event, MOEA deputy minister Ho Chin-tsang said that environment, society and governance are core factors in corporate sustainability. Ho added that the MOEA will work proactively across other ministries to assist corporate bodies to address net-zero challenges.
Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming said that the government has proposed a green growth strategy and actively incorporated business’ opinions in discussing carbon fee systems. It hopes to find a balance between business and system benefits, and will cooperate across six ministries to launch a green collar training policy.
Ho and Peng further stated that a meeting of the national climate change committee would be held Aug. 8 and would take on a social communication role that combined industry, government and academia to jointly address climate change and energy issues.
