President Lai unveils policy blueprints on Indigenous Peoples’ Day

President Lai Ching-te laid out his government’s comprehensive policy direction for continued improvement of the lives of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples at the national Indigenous peoples’ policy summit Aug. 1 in Taipei City, according to the Presidential Office.
During his address Lai first thanked the Indigenous community for representing Taiwan on the global stage and contributing to domestic society in areas including art, culture, education, medicine, sports and beyond. The president went on to stress that he is a staunch supporter of Indigenous rights, citing his promotion of the Indigenous Peoples Basic Law and the Development of National Languages Act.
According to Lai, one of the five new policy goals highlights language revitalization for Indigenous tribes throughout the country. Another goal is to improve the health of Indigenous citizens, which is an aim he has actively supported since his tenure as premier.
Indigenous culture is a high priority, Lai said, calling it a precious asset for the entire world and noting the links between Taiwan’s native groups and other Austronesian peoples. The president furthermore pointed out the need to cultivate Indigenous talents in various fields and promote sustainable development, adding that the government’s work to enhance infrastructure in in tribal towns and villages will also help advance economic and industrial development.
The policy blueprints will be implemented by the Council of Indigenous Peoples and supported by relevant ministries and agencies, Lai said.
