2024/07/30
Minister of Education Cheng Ying-yao said the government has spared no effort to support Taiwan’s athletes at the 2024 Paris Games with training facilities and the comforts of home.
The minister made the remarks July 26 while visiting the food station, physical therapy clinic and training center with Lin Hong-dow, president of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, and François Chih-chung Wu, Taiwan’s representative to France. According to Cheng, these special arrangements underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring that athletes are able to perform their best by offering healthy, home-style food and training facilities that allow team members flexibility in pre-competition preparations and post-game therapy and treatment.
Cheng thanked Agnès Pottier-Dumas, mayor of Levallois-Perret, for opening her community’s physical therapy clinic and civic sports center to Team Taiwan free of charge. In response, the mayor said it was a pleasure to host Team Taiwan and display Taiwan’s flag at the sports center in a show of support for the athletes.
In gratitude for Levallois-Perret’s warm welcome, the minister invited the mayor to visit Taiwan soon. The MOE has also launched a five-year scholarship program that offers full scholarships to 10 students from the commune outside Paris who pursue a degree in Taiwan, as well as a monthly stipend of NT$25,000 (US$761) for 20 individuals studying Mandarin each year.
The day before, Cheng met with 2020 Tokyo Games badminton silver medalist Tai Tzu-ying and gold medalists Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin, table tennis bronze medalist Lin Yun-ju and boxer Kan Chia-wei at the Olympic Village to check that they were comfortably settled. He then visited the Paris Foreign Missions Society and attended a prayer service for Team Taiwan led by Etienne Frécon, a priest of the society.
According to the Sports Administration, Team Taiwan is composed of 60 athletes who are contesting in 16 sports including breaking, gymnastics, tennis and weightlifting.
