President Lai Ching-te emphasized that a global epidemic prevention network requires the participation of all nations and called for unified support for Taiwan to join the World Health Organization.
Lai made the remarks while attending the opening ceremony of the 23rd International Conference on Emergency Medicine June 20 at Taipei International Convention Center in the capital.
Speaking in English, Lai said that ICEM is the world’s largest academic convention on emergency medicine, adding that the event attracted over 2,500 academics and experts from home and abroad, which evidenced the importance of the subject and that the conference served as a symbol of global medical cooperation.
This year marked the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Taiwan Emergency Medicine Association, Lai noted. The president thanked chairperson of ICEM 2024, Chip-jin Ng, for holding the conference in Taiwan, which raised global visibility for the country’s development and contribution in the field.
The theme of the ICEM 2024 is “Glocalization of Emergency Medicine: Global Wisdom and Local Solution,” and the president commented that uneven division of global development in emergency medicine could be minimized through clinical, public health and smart strategy policies. Lai further added that the International Federation for Emergency Medicine’s goal is to provide optimum quality emergency services for all.
