Taiwan stages international ESG trends and strategies conference

2024/06/24

An international conference on global environmental, social and governance trends and corporate strategies was held June 20 in Taipei City, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing local firms’ resilience and global competitiveness.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the one-day event was organized by Taipei-based Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research under the auspices of the MOEA’s Department of Investment Promotion. It involved around 100 representatives from Taiwan’s academic, public and private sectors.

The DIP said ESG aspects play a key role in ensuring sustainable corporate development and social progress. Taiwan has been tackling challenges stemming from climate change and industrial transformation through policy measures and legislation, as well as promoting related market mechanisms and corporate adaptations, the department added.

The conference provided a platform for all relevant parties to discuss issues faced by Taiwan’s private sector, identify potential opportunities and formulate the best solutions, the DIP said.

Highlights of the event included a presentation on Taiwan’s prospective participation in various international organizations and regional economic agreements by Catherine Li, a law professor at Taipei-based Soochow University; case studies on ESG risks by Chang Kai-chi, assistant law professor at Soochow; and experience sharing from Roger Tseng, the partner of climate change, sustainability services and ESG advisory at Ernst & Young’s Taipei branch.
