Taiwan artists set to shine in Europe

2024/06/21

Nine Taiwan artistic teams are to participate in Festival Avignon Off, Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Dusseldorf’s Internationale Tanzmesse in July and August, according to the Ministry of Culture.

The MOC has long supported the performances of domestic troupes on the international stage as a way to present contemporary visions of Taiwan from the perspective of its own people. The groups going to Europe will make use of acrobatics, dance, drama, new circus and puppetry to share Taiwan with the world.

Festival Avignon Off opens July 3 in the southeastern French city of Avignon, the MOC said, adding that four teams from Taiwan will take part. Eye Catching Circus and Shinehouse Theatre hail from Taipei City, while Chun Dance joins them from the nearby northern city of Taoyuan City and Resident Island Dance Theatre represents Tainan City in the south.

Taiwan Season begins Aug. 2 at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. The program, organized by the MOC, will see Taipei-based Bon Appetit Theatre, D_antidote Production and 0471 Acro Physical Theatre display their talents and skills alongside Seed Dance from Pingtung County in southern Taiwan.

When Internationale Tanzmesse in Dusseldorf begins Aug. 28, National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) under the name Taiwan Move! will introduce 20 complete creations at its pavilion. The performances of the southern Taiwan organization touch on the event’s topics of cultural identity, community and migration.

The MOC said it would continue seeking opportunities for local artists overseas in addition to building access to global performance networks through events like the three upcoming European festivals.
