Minister Liu Chin-ching of the National Development Council said that the U.S. has always been one of Taiwan’s major economic and trade partners and welcomed continued investment from American Chamber of Commerce members in Taiwan.
The minister made the remarks at an event June 6 in Taipei City marking the release of AmCham’s 2024 White Paper, according to the council. He noted Taiwan’s firm foundation in the semiconductor sector and said that future development would focus on the dual core of artificial intelligence and semiconductors, adding that Taiwan and the U.S. have built close partnerships in the upstream and downstream supply chains of both industries.
Liu added that the NDC would prepare a budget for the establishment of a tech hub either in northern or southern Taiwan that would include an AI center, advanced scientific research facilities, and innovation and startup support to advance the country’s AI industry. He also said that the council would discuss matters related to visas, living, study and recruitment with relevant ministries to prepare a smooth path for international talent.
The minister shared that the government has been optimizing relevant procedures, such as the adoption of a 60-day public notice and comment period for new rules, in order to promote transparency of regulations, reinforce civil participation and bring regulatory frameworks into alignment with the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st-Century Trade.
AmCham Taiwan Chairperson Dan Silver said that Taiwan was on a rising trajectory as a global leader and expressed his gratitude for the efforts of Taiwan’s government. He anticipated that the two sides would continue their close collaboration to jointly create a more resilient investment climate.
