The Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanked U.S. President Joe Biden June 5 for reaffirming the U.S.’ commitment to both Taiwan’s security and the peaceful and stable status quo in the region.
The MOFA’s statement came in response to the president’s recent interview with U.S. publication Time Magazine for the article “‘We Are the World Power.’ How Joe Biden Leads” released June 4.
In response to questions regarding a possible invasion of Taiwan, Biden cited long-held U.S. policy and said he does not rule out using military force in a defensive capacity. He added that the U.S. continues to supply Taiwan with resources to defend itself, and has been in consultation with allies in the region.
According to the MOFA, China uses the routine processes of democracy as a pretext to exert military pressure in the region, make intimidating remarks and conduct gray zone coercion. These threatening acts pose a major challenge to regional peace, stability and prosperity, raising serious concerns in the international community.
The government remains resolute in defending Taiwan’s freedom, democracy and security, the MOFA said. The country will continue enhancing its capacity for self-defense as it deepens cooperation with like-minded partners to ensure the cross-strait status quo, defend the rules-based international order and advance peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added.
