MOFA welcomes Malaysia’s launch of e-gate service for Taiwan nationals

2024/05/29

The opening of Malaysia’s automated immigration clearance system to Taiwan citizens is deeply appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 24.

According to the MOFA, starting June 1, ROC (Taiwan) passport holders will be able to use Malaysia’s e-gate system when entering and leaving the country. Passengers who enter the Southeast Asian country for the first time on or after the date must present their passports for regular immigration clearance at a staffed counter for registration, the ministry said, adding that they will then be able to use e-gates when leaving Malaysia and on subsequent visits.

The service will increase immigration clearance efficiency for Taiwan visitors, the MOFA said, adding that it will also further strengthen bilateral exchanges in areas spanning art, commerce, culture, economy, tourism and trade.

Malaysia is the 10th country to offer Taiwan nationals access to such a service, along with Australia, Czechia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the U.K. and the U.S. Passengers are required to apply in advance and pay a fee for e-gate access in Japan, the U.K. and the U.S., while the service in Czechia is only available to those arriving on direct flights.

The MOFA reminds travelers that related stipulations and regulations should be observed when using e-gates, and the announcements of relevant governments take precedence.
