Premier Cho Jung-tai called the first Cabinet meeting at the Executive Yuan May 23 in Taipei City and directed all central agencies to adopt innovative thinking and work closely with local governments to implement President Lai Ching-te’s policies aimed at balancing development nationwide.
Cho expressed gratitude to the president for assigning him such a vital mission, and thanked his team for accepting the responsibility to work with him to tackle challenges at home and abroad.
According to the premier, the first document he signed after taking office was about food safety, highlighting the new government’s commitment to public safety. He also traveled to the eastern county of Hualien, which was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on April 3, to personally inspect reconstruction progress.
Cho named the next priority as ensuring that four bills on combating fraud approved by the Cabinet receive legislative approval as soon as possible, and reiterated that the new government is resolute in its determination to fight corruption.
In response to the ongoing situation on the legislative floor, Cho asked that senior officials clearly elaborate on government policies in a professional manner during legislative sessions. The Legislative Yuan is where public opinion is reflected, and members of the Cabinet need to communicate with lawmakers in a manner that prioritizes the people’s interests, he added.
