MOFA urges China to stop escalating regional tensions

2024/05/27

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for China to exert self-restraint and cease any aggressions that could jeopardize cross-strait peace and stability May 23 following China’s launch of the two-day Joint Sword-2024A military exercise around Taiwan.

According to the MOFA, there is a growing consensus among the international community on the importance of maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait. Despite rising global concern, China has repeatedly threatened Taiwan’s democracy, attempting to unilaterally change the status quo and jeopardizing regional security, the ministry said.

A recent survey conducted by Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council revealed that 92. 6 percent of respondents disapprove of China’s continuous military incursions into airspace and waters surrounding Taiwan. Beijing should recognize that the people’s hearts cannot be won through intimidation and continued coercion will only escalate tensions between the two sides, the MAC said, urging China to engage in dialogue with Taiwan’s democratically elected government to seek mutually beneficial solutions.

The MOFA reiterated that Taiwan’s determination to uphold democracy will not waver under any oppression. The government will continue collaborating with like-minded partners to jointly safeguard democracy, freedom and the rules-based international order, as well as the cross-strait status quo and Indo-Pacific stability, the ministry concluded.
