Taiwan films shortlisted for Seattle International Film Festival

2024/05/13

The movies “A Journey in Spring” and “Is This Now the Time I Should Let You Go?” by Taiwan directors were respectively selected for the new directors and the shorts competitions at the 50th Seattle International Film Festival, according to the Ministry of Culture May 8.

Jointly directed by Peng Tzu-hui and Wang Ping-wen, the Taiwanese language “A Journey in Spring” reveals an elderly husband’s grief at his wife’s sudden death by keeping her corpse in the freezer. The film earned the Best Director Award at the 71st San Sebastian Festival in Spain last year and was shortlisted for the New Directors/New Films festival held earlier this year in New York, the MOC said, adding that the directors were also invited to attend a Q&A session during the current event.

Equally impressive is the animated short documentary “Is This Now the Time I Should Let You Go?” directed by Tsai Yi-chin. It shows a daughter’s loss of her father and was selected for the 2023 Sundance Film Festival Asia.

According to the Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, two films “Pigsy” and “Dragon Superman” were also selected to be screened at the festival.

Inspired by the Chinese classic “Journey to the West,” the animation “Pigsy” takes place in a cyberpunk science fiction setting and the story follows the character’s deceitful quest for a better life, only to find latterly that true happiness is closer than he thought. The Taiwanese language “Dragon Superman” follows the protagonist’s metamorphosis into a hero who protects citizens and fights against evil villains by putting on a blindfold and costume akin to Robin in “Batman.”

Running until May 19, the Seattle International Film Festival presents a total of 261 films from 84 countries and territories around the world.
