MOFA thanks leaders of US, Japan for supportive statement

The recent remarks by U.S. President Joe Biden and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reaffirming support for cross-strait and regional peace are sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said April 11.
 
According to the MOFA, the two leaders issued a joint statement pledging to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific following their April 10 summit in Washington D.C.
 
The leaders emphasized that their basic positions on Taiwan remain unchanged, reiterating the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of global security and prosperity and encouraging the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues.
 
In a fact sheet released the same day regarding joint investments in the Indo-Pacific, the leaders recognized Taiwan’s contribution to plans to deliver connectivity to Tuvalu as part of a multinational effort to build trusted and more resilient networks in the Pacific.
 
At a time when China’s persistent military expansion and gray zone tactics pose ongoing challenges to the region, the supportive remarks from Biden and Kishida clearly demonstrate that maintaining cross-strait peace and stability has become a global consensus, the MOFA said, calling on the world to continue to pay attention to the issue.
 
As a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan will keep working with the U.S., Japan and all other like-minded partners to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the region while always seeking new ways to contribute to matters of global development, the ministry said.
