2024/04/09

The announcement by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the donation of US$1 million for reconstruction work in the earthquake-stricken eastern county of Hualien is deeply appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 5.

According to the MOFA, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida conveyed timely condolences over the casualties and damages caused by the 7.2 magnitude quake April 3, adding that his country was standing by to provide assistance. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi and Kazuyuki Katayama, chief representative of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association’s Taipei office also voiced their concern immediately.

Additionally, the deep bilateral bond between the neighboring nations was on display as local governments and private citizens across Japan launched fundraisers for the people of Hualien and other affected areas, the MOFA said. The ministry added that as both countries are frequently subject to earthquakes, the two sides have a long history of helping each other through major disasters.

The MOFA expressed hope that Taiwan and Japan’s deep ties at this difficult time would demonstrate a cycle of kindness that could be shared throughout international society.
