MOFA aids Mongolia’s blizzard recovery

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has donated a total of US$100,000 to help recovery efforts in Mongolia after the country was hit with its worst blizzard in 50 years in February, underscoring Taiwan’s commitment to acting as a force for good in the international community.

On behalf of the ministry, Anthony Chung-yi Ho, director-general of MOFA’s Department of West Asian and African Affairs, presented the funds to Gankhuyag Tumurbaatar, head of the Ulaanbaatar Trade and Economic Representative Office in Taipei, and Rev. Monsignor Stefano Mazzotti of the Apostolic Nunciature in Taiwan during a ceremony April 2 in Taipei City.

According to the MOFA, the donation will be evenly divided between the Mongolian Red Cross Society and Caritas Mongolia under the Holy See.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ho said Taiwan and Mongolia have a long-standing bond. The Taiwan government and people are more than willing to help following Mongolia’s worst disaster in decades, he added.

In response, Tumurbaatar said that many herders are facing major challenges to their livelihoods. He thanked Taiwan for its generosity and vowed the money would be dispatched to those in need.

Mazzotti said that CM has long provided aid to the poor and is committed to enhancing disaster response, education and food security. He voiced appreciation for Taiwan’s contribution and cooperation with the organization.

Bilateral exchanges spanning culture, education, medicine and climate change preparedness have grown in recent years, the MOFA said, adding that Mongolia has become a popular sightseeing destination for Taiwan travelers.

The ministry wished Mongolia a smooth recovery and expressed hope that its citizens can soon resume their normal lives.
