Taiwan, US stage GCTF workshop on maritime matters in Athens

A workshop on innovation and inclusion in the shipping industry was held by Taiwan and the U.S. under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework March 27 in Greece, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Jointly organized by the Taipei Representative Office in Greece, the U.S. Embassy in Athens and the branch of the International Propeller Club of the U.S. based in nearby Piraeus, the event discussed methods of enhancing the sector’s sustainable development in the context of the EU’s green transformation measures and in response to global climate change.
Opening remarks were delivered by Sherman S. Kuo, head of TRO in Greece; U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Maria Olson; IPC President Costis Frangoulis; and George Pateras, chair of the Piraeus-based Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, the MOFA said. The workshop was attended by around 130 academics, experts and business representatives, who came from Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine Corp. and Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp., as well as Greek and Japanese entities, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, President Chen Jiahn-horng of the National Academy of Marine Research under the Cabinet-level Ocean Affairs Council presented on the OAC’s use of digital tools like its National Ocean Database and Sharing System to help vulnerable areas assess climate risks. Tseng Yun-ching, director of the Research, Development and Evaluation Department under the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), additionally shared the country’s experience in assisting its allies in advancing energy transition and climate adjustment, the ministry said.
Since its launch in 2015 by Taiwan and the U.S., GCTF has become a critical platform for facilitating discussion of solutions to global issues. The initiative was later joined by Japan and Australia, with affiliated events having been held outside the founding countries since 2021.
