Minister of Digital Affairs Audrey Tang highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to deepening global democratic resilience during the 2024 Summit for Democracy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Held March 18-20 in Seoul, this year’s event was themed “Democracy for Future Generations,” the MOFA said, adding that Tang delivered an address via a prerecorded video for a roundtable session titled “Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies: Right-Respecting Innovation in Democratic Societies” on the first day.
Taiwan’s belief in the power of technology and co-creation has helped it successfully counter cyberattacks and cognitive warfare, Tang said. Only by adhering to democratic ideals can the country find the best solutions to ethical, political and social challenges brought on by emerging technologies, she added.
According to the MOFA, Taipei Mission in Korea Head Liang Kuang-chung attended meetings of the event in person and remotely participated in its Leaders’ Plenary on the last day.
The ministry said U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised Taiwan’s strong democratic resilience in the face of disinformation during his opening speech, adding that such remarks demonstrate widespread recognition of Taiwan’s democratic development.
Taiwan’s presidential election completed in January once again showed the international community the maturity of its democracy, the MOFA said. The country will continue to work with like-minded partners in the spirit of pragmatism, professionalism and safeguarding global democratic values, it added.
