President Tsai Ing-wen said March 14 that Taiwan is committed to enhancing its economic resilience and will work with Japan and other regional partners to build safer supply chains.
Tsai made the remarks while attending the 51st East Asian Economic Conference Joint Meeting of Representatives from Taiwan and Japan in Taipei City.
The president quoted her remarks from 2015 in which she promised to deepen the two sides’ industrial cooperation on the strength of their complementary advantages. The bilateral exchanges have since been flourishing, Tsai said, citing the opening of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s Kumamoto plant last month and the increasing investment by Japanese semiconductor manufacturers like Tokyo Electron Ltd. in Taiwan.
According to Tsai, bilateral trade topped US$75 billion in 2023, an increase of 26 percent from 2016. Mutual investment has also soared to new heights, reaching $38.6 billion last year, she said, adding that such strong numbers are paving the way for future Taiwan-Japan collaboration in areas spanning artificial intelligence, digital transformation and green transition.
Taiwan and Japan share the values of freedom and democracy, and they are true friends who support each other through times of disaster and other difficulty, Tsai said. She noted that Japan is also one of the top destinations for travelers from Taiwan and she believes the two partners’ friendship will remain as strong over the next half century as it has been for the preceding five decades.
Tsai also took the opportunity to urge participants to support Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, which she said will allow the country to contribute more to the global development and prosperity.
