President Tsai receives Center for American Progress delegation

President Tsai Ing-wen received a delegation from Washington-based think tank Center for American Progress at the Presidential Office March 13 in Taipei City, pledging to expand cooperation with Taiwan’s like-minded partners to preserve regional peace and stability while promoting global prosperity.
 
According to the PO, the group was led by former U.S. Senator and CAP Chair Thomas Daschle and comprised former House Rep. David Price and former Undersecretary of Defense Michèle Flournoy.
 
Tsai welcomed the visitors and lauded CAP as a prominent think tank whose policy recommendations are highly regarded by the U.S. government. It is a pleasure to exchange views with members as the two sides prepare to mark the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, a cornerstone symbolizing the fiendly two-way ties, next month, she said.
 
According to the president, in addition to sharing the values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, Taiwan and the U.S. are important economic partners, as evidenced by the first agreement concluded last year under the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st-Century Trade. She said Taiwan looks forward to addressing the issue of double taxation as soon as possible to create a mutually beneficial investment environment.
 
Tsai also took the opportunity to thank the visitors for their contributions to issues that affect Taiwan, as well as the international community. Their visit highlights the close Taiwan-U.S. bond, she said, adding that Taiwan is eager to share its experience in public health and net-zero transition with the rest of the world.
 
In response, Daschle praised Tsai’s extraordinary leadership over the past eight years. He said that Taiwan has become one of the most robust democracies in the world, created one of the most successful health care systems and embraced civil and human rights in ways no other country in the region has accomplished.
 
Leaders in both Taiwan and the U.S. share a vision about the future, Daschle said, adding that this will bring the two sides closer in economic affairs, national security and many other areas.
