MOFA thanks US for reaffirming security commitment to Taiwan

The US$100 million earmarked in U.S. President Joe Biden’s 2025 Fiscal Year Budget Request for a standalone request for Taiwan military assistance is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said March 12.
 
According to the MOFA, the latest development follows US$500 million set aside last year through the U.S. Presidential Drawdown Authority to provide military aid for Taiwan to strengthen its deterrence capabilities and maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
 
Richard Verma, U.S. deputy secretary of state for management and resources, said at a press event later the same day that this historic move reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to security assistance for Taiwan and to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
 
The MOFA noted that Biden also stressed that the U.S. is standing up for cross-strait peace and stability in his March 7 State of the Union address. These developments, including the normalization of arms sales to Taiwan, highlight the importance Washington attaches to both Taiwan’s security needs and peace and stability in the region, it added.
 
The government will continue to implement military reform, strengthen the country’s defense capability and expand cooperation with the U.S. and other like-minded partners to promote peace, stability and prosperity across the strait and in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry said.
