President Tsai Ing-wen said March 7 that Taiwan is committed to working with Estonia to deepen bilateral partnership and advance global democratic development.
Tsai made the remarks while meeting with a delegation from the Riigikogu’s Taiwan friendship group led by Chair Kristo Enn Vaga at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
According to Tsai, Taiwan and Estonia share the values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights and the rule of law. The two partners have actively assisted Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s invasion, Tsai said, adding that Taiwan seeks to strengthen cooperation with the Estonian Centre for International Development to help the East European country rebuild its infrastructure.
The president took the opportunity to thank the Estonian government and group members for backing Taiwan’s bid to participate in the World Health Organization for four years running. Tsai added that she hopes the two countries will continue expanding exchanges in areas such as information and communications technology and precision machinery.
In response, Vaga said that Estonia is a big advocate of e-governance and Taiwan is a global leader in semiconductors, making the two ideal ICT cooperation partners. Each side is working to apply new technologies to government operations to improve services for the people, he added.
The cross-party delegation’s visit is a show of solidarity with Taiwan, Vaga said, adding that both Taiwan and Estonia have aggressive neighbors and must stand together to protect their democratic way of life.
The chair expressed admiration for Taiwan’s aid to Ukraine even as it faces continuous threats from China. He added that delegation members are advocating for a Taiwan representative office in Tallinn to strengthen two-way ties.
