Foreign Minister Wu hosts banquet for Estonian parliamentary delegation

2024/03/08

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu hosted a banquet for a delegation from Estonia’s Riigikogu March 6 in Taipei City, expressing his hope that the current visit will give group members deeper insight on Taiwan’s democratic way of life and its flourishing civic society, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Led by Kristo Enn Vaga, chair of the Taiwan friendship group in the Estonian parliament, the eight-member group is in Taiwan March 4-8 to promote bilateral exchanges.

The minister said he gained a deeper understanding of Estonia’s history of authoritarian rule and its fight for freedom while visiting the Baltic state for the first time last year. He added that the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war drives home how important it is for like-minded partners to counter the challenges and threats of authoritarian regimes.

Taiwan and Estonia have worked together to enhance global democratic resilience, Wu said, demonstrating the unity of frontline democracies as they provided aid to Ukraine.

In response, Vaga noted that despite the distance that separates Taiwan and Estonia physically, they share a determination to fight against totalitarianism. He added that the Riigikogu delegation members come from five of the major parties in Estonia, showing the staunch cross-party support for Taiwan within the parliament.

Wu and the group members additionally exchanged views on issues such as Taiwan-EU economic and trade relations, cybersecurity and disinformation threats, cross-strait peace and stability, China’s ambitions in the South China Sea, and the political and economic situation in the Baltic Sea region, Central and Eastern Europe, the MOFA said.
