Recent remarks by leaders and senior officials of Australia, Malaysia and Japan on the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
According to the Joint Statement for the 2nd Australia-Malaysia Annual Leaders’ Meeting held March 4 in Melbourne, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Malaysian PM Anwar bin Ibrahim both acknowledged the importance of cross-strait peace and stability. Everyone has a stake in conflict prevention, they added while emphasizing that open communication, reassurance and transparency are crucial.
In a news conference the following day in Tokyo, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said Japan hopes to see a peaceful resolution of the Taiwan issue and would directly convey this position to China.
Hayashi said China’s rapid military expansion and lack of transparency poses the greatest strategic challenge to the rules-based international order. He reiterated that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are essential not only to Japan’s security but also that of the global community, adding that Japan will continue to work closely with the U.S. and other allies to maintain peace and stability in the region.
The MOFA encourages members of the free world to continue counteracting authoritarian expansion. Taiwan is committed to enhancing its resilience and defense capabilities against China’s coercion, the ministry said, adding that the government will keep working with its like-minded partners to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
