President Tsai receives Michigan delegation

President Tsai Ing-wen looks forward to further economic and trade partnerships between Taiwan and Michigan as well as personnel and technical exchange.

Tsai made the remarks while receiving a U.S. delegation led by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Mar. 5 in the Presidential Office in Taipei City. Whitmer’s visit coincided with the launch of the Michigan Taiwan Office, which will deepen bilateral economic and trade partnership.

The president noted that Michigan is a global automotive industry hub, adding that many Taiwan auto parts dealers have invested in the state and set up operations there. Tsai anticipated that Taiwan’s EV and semiconductor supply chains will cooperate with Michigan’s automotive, semiconductor industries and microelectronics research.

Evidencing the strong relations, in 2022, both chambers of the Michigan legislature established a bipartisan Taiwan Friendship Caucus, for which Tsai expressed appreciation. In addition, in 2023, Taiwan and Michigan signed a memorandum of understanding focusing on academic and industry collaboration in the fields of artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and semiconductors. 

In response, Whitmer lauded Tsai for her outstanding achievements over the past eight years, saying that one of the president’s major contributions was the advancement of Taiwan-US links. The governor emphasized that both the Michigan government and citizens are fully committed to enhancing two-way ties and she was confident that the Michigan Taiwan Office would further strengthen the existing cultural and economic bond.
