The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced March 5 that Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tien Chung-kwang is leading a delegation to congratulate the new government of Tuvalu and its prime minister, Feleti Teo.
Tien will represent the government and people of Taiwan as President Tsai Ing-wen’s special envoy, the MOFA said. During the visit to the Pacific ally, Tien will attend celebratory activities, convey Tsai’s best wishes to the new prime minister and cabinet members and exchange views on cooperative projects with Teo, Governor-General Tofiga Falani and Foreign Minister Paulson Panapa before returning to Taiwan March 9, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, Taiwan and Tuvalu established diplomatic ties 45 years ago and both completed important elections earlier this year. The two countries both value freedom, democracy and the rule of law, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue to work with its Pacific ally to advance peace, prosperity and sustainability in the Indo-Pacific.
On its official X account, the MOFA added: “We applaud #Tuvalu PM Feleti Teo’s recent statement reiterating his country’s choice of #Taiwan over #China based on shared democratic principles & mutual loyalty. We look forward to continued strong ties with our ally for the benefit of our peoples.”
