Delivering her acceptance speech, Yu said the story presents Tsai as a role model for a new generation through showing events in his tumultuous life as opposed to the usual portrayal of him as a political victim. The story educates about the martial law era, giving both domestic and international readers a deeper understanding of Taiwan history.
Launched in 2017, the Émile Guimet Prize for Asian Literature encourages Asian writers to translate and publish original work in France.
