MOFA welcomes U.S. Representative Mike Gallagher and delegation
2024/02/23
A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation to Taiwan is sincerely welcomed by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Feb. 22 in Taipei City.
Led by Representative Mike Gallagher, chair of the House select committee on competition with China, the group includes Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Rep. John Moolenaar, Rep. Dusty Johnson and Rep. Seth Moulton. It is the first time the committee, set up in 2023, has formed a visiting delegation.
During the delegates’ three-day trip, they will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen, vice president and president-elect Lai Ching-te, as well as vice president-elect Hsiao Bi-khim. The delegation will attend a reception hosted by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu.
The committee has been vocal in support of reinforcing Taiwan security and enhancing deterrence against China’s expansionism through concrete action. The stance is evidenced by Gallagher and Krishnamoorthi’s joint statement of congratulations on Taiwan’s election in January.
Since the beginning of the current 118th session of the U.S. Congress on Jan. 3, top personnel from key committees in both the Senate and the House of Representatives have organized cross-party delegations to visit Taiwan, the MOFA said. The visits demonstrate U.S. support for the country and the great importance placed on a commitment to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act and as such the delegation’s visit is significant. MOFA believes the visit will further strengthen the comprehensive partnership and close cooperation across the world in various sectors.
