MOFA refutes China’s erroneous claim over Taiwan

The ROC (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent nation that China has never ruled, the MOFA said Feb. 19, adding that false claims of jurisdiction over Taiwan will not change facts or the internationally recognized status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
 
The ministry’s response follows an irresponsible misrepresentation of the situation by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in a press release after his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, which was held Feb. 16-18.
 
The MOFA condemned Beijing’s attempts to mislead the global community by continuously putting forth its so-called "one China principle" to support a claim of sovereignty over Taiwan. The ministry called on China to cease its attempts to unilaterally change the cross-strait status quo.
 
According to the MOFA, China would be better served by focusing on its internal issues, adding that the future of Taiwan is for its 23 million people to decide.
