MOFA thanks US Congress for supportive resolutions

The unanimous passage of a bipartisan resolution Jan. 11 by the U.S. Senate commending Taiwan for its commitment to democratic elections and institutions is welcomed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 
On the eve of Taiwan’s presidential and legislative elections set for Jan. 13, such clear support from Congress for Taiwan’s democratic system is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the ministry said.
 
According to the MOFA, the resolution was initiated by Sens. Dan Sullivan and Tim Kaine and co-sponsored by 36 other members of the Senate, including Richard Durbin, Chris Van Hollen, Mitt Romney, Chris Coons, Jeanne Shaheen, John Cornyn, Tammy Duckworth and Thom Tillis.
 
The resolution noted Taiwan began a transition to a liberal democracy in the late 1980s and its vibrant civil society, diverse economy and stable political system form a basis for the country’s prosperity and freedom. This is in stark contrast to the dictatorship that China’s citizens live under, it said, adding that the U.S. is Taiwan’s partner against coercion, threats and military attacks from China.
 
The resolution commends Taiwan for setting an example for self-governance not just for the Pacific region but for the world and regards Taiwan’s democracy as a great strategic strength for the free world. It states that the democratic system is an indispensable component of contemporary U.S.-Taiwan relations and remains concerned about China’s interference in the nation’s elections.
 
The Senate will remain committed to a strong partnership across diplomatic, information, military, economic and cultural domains, as well as using all means at its disposal to support Taiwan’s self-defense and the liberty of its people through effective deterrence.
 
The ministry said House Reps. Gerry Connolly, Mario Diaz-Balart, Ami Bera and Andy Barr, all co-chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, have introduced companion legislation. More than 30 other bipartisan members of the House have given their endorsement, including Michael McCaul, Mike Gallagher and Raja Krishnamoorthi.
