MOFA thanks US for latest arms sale to Taiwan

The U.S. government’s decision to approve an arms sale valued at approximately US$300 million is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Dec. 16.
 
Initiated at the behest of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S., the deal encompasses support for C4 systems: command, control, communications and computers. According to the MOFA, the deal reflects the U.S. policy of normalizing arms sales to Taiwan and underscores Washington’s commitment to the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances.
 
The ministry said U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration has now authorized 12 sales since 2021, highlighting the importance the U.S. attaches to Taiwan’s security needs. The requested equipment will help continue the modernization of Taiwan’s armed forces and enhance the country’s defense readiness and deterring capabilities, it added.
 
Facing China’s ongoing military expansion and provocation, Taiwan is determined to defend itself and ensure freedom and well-being of its people, the MOFA said. The government will continue to deepen the strategic partnership with the U.S. to safeguard rules-based international order and promote peace, stability and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific, it added.
 
In a press release issued the same day, the Presidential Office thanked Washington for its continued commitment to Taiwan. The sale of systems operation and support equipment will allow the military to increase its effectiveness in the execution of defensive combat operations, the PO said.
