MOFA thanks EP for resolution, reports supporting Taiwan

2023/12/15

The European Parliament’s passage of a resolution and three reports Dec. 13 calling for expanded trade partnership with Taiwan and supporting peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is sincerely welcomed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the resolution on EU-Taiwan trade and investment relations, the EP highlighted the importance of Taiwan for the EU and global supply chains, describing it as a reliable and like-minded partner in line with the EU’s economic security strategy amid the current geopolitical context.

The resolution said there are cooperation opportunities between the two sides that can counteract economic coercion and ensure economic security. It urged the EU to pursue a resilient supply chain agreement with Taiwan and reiterated its call for a bilateral investment agreement to enhance two-way partnership in digital trade and cyber resilience.

In its reports adopted the same day on relations with China, the U.S. and Japan, the EP condemned China’s increasing military provocation in and around the strait, opposed Beijing’s distortion of U.N. Resolution 2758 and called on the EU to work with regional partners and the U.S. to ensure freedom of navigation in the strait, South China Sea and East China Sea to ensure uninterrupted regional and global commerce, security and prosperity.

The EP also urged the EU to work with its partners to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the meetings, mechanisms and activities of relevant international institutions such as the World Health Organization, International Civil Aviation Organization and U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change.

According to the MOFA, the resolution and reports underscore the EP’s concern over regional developments and its strong support for democratic Taiwan.
