Foreign Minister Wu gives exclusive interview to Infobae

2023/12/07

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu urged Latin American countries to exercise caution in dealing with China, particularly due to its economic slowdown Dec. 1 in Taipei City.

Wu made the remarks during an interview with Laureano Pérez Izquierdo, editor-in-chief of Infobae, for an article published Dec. 4 on the Argentinian online newspaper’s website.

According to Wu, when China’s economy was booming, many countries thought aligning themselves with China would bolster economic growth. As China’s economy has slowed, those countries have encountered setbacks as its promises remain unfulfilled, he explained.

The minister said that Taiwan avoids economic dependence on China and nurtures its own growth and development, especially in highly technical fields. Wu added that Taiwan is always willing to share what it has learned from its engagement with China.

When asked about U.S. President Biden’s Nov. 15 meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Wu responded that Taiwan takes a positive view on the stabilization of U.S.-China relations, adding that if the two sides resumed talks, it would benefit the international community.

The minister also said that although President Tsai Ing-wen has been open to holding cross-strait talks since she took office, China has continued to insist that Taiwan accept its “One China principle” and the policy of “one country, two systems.”

Repeating the call for China to engage in a dialogue, the minister declared that Taiwan would continue to uphold cross-strait peace and stability, while improving its self-defense capabilities as a deterrent for China’s military aggression.
