Taiwan opens economic and cultural office in Montreal

2023/12/07

A new Taipei economic and cultural office began operating Dec. 4 in Montreal, marking a milestone in the Taiwan-Canada relationship, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During a reception celebrating the event in the Canadian city, a pre-recorded video message was delivered by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, who praised Taiwan and Canada’s shared values of freedom and democracy.

The new office underscores Taiwan’s commitment to deepening partnership with Canada in key areas such as culture, education, science and technology, trade and investment, Indigenous affairs and medical care, the minister said. It is also expected to serve as a bridge in promoting people-to-people exchanges, he added.

According to the ministry, the event was attended by Harry Ho-jen Tseng, Taiwan’s representative to Canada; Rita P. Chen, the new facility’s director; Judy Sgro, chair of the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on International Trade; and several other lawmakers from the North American country.

The new facility will provide services to Taiwan tourists and expatriates in the provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as the northernmost territory of Nunavut, the MOFA said.

It will closely work with the Ottawa-based Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada to enhance collaboration between the two countries across the board, including promoting Taiwan’s inclusion in the Montreal-headquartered International Civil Aviation Organization, the ministry added.
