Taiwan, EBRD stage 2nd annual donor day in London

Taiwan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development held a donor day event Nov. 28 at the latter’s London headquarters, reflecting government commitment to advancing green, digital transformation and economic empowerment for countries in need, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The event was attended by Kelly W. Hsieh, Taiwan’s representative to the U.K., Greg G.D. Lee, deputy director-general of the MOFA’s Department of International Organizations, EBRD Vice President for Policy and Partnerships Mark Bowman and Managing Director for Impact and Partnerships Ines Rocha, among others.
During the event, Hsieh and Bowman signed an agreement pledging an additional donation from Taiwan to the Taiwan-EBRD technical cooperation fund, with the new funding going to the Ukraine Recovery Guarantee Facility and the International Chernobyl Cooperation Account. Hsieh also signed an agreement with Rocha to affirm the government’s intent to work with other donors such as the EU, U.K. and Norway to help ensure nuclear safety and energy stability in Ukraine.
In addition, the ministry said Taiwan’s delegation exchanged views with EBRD representatives on promoting reconstruction in Ukraine, Taiwan’s participation in EBRD projects in sub-Saharan Africa, expanding personnel exchanges, enhancing Taiwan’s visibility in countries receiving donations and facilitating connection between Taiwan firms and the EBRD.
Officials from Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs and Financial Supervisory Commission also took part via videoconference and discussed key issues such as information security, digital transformation, capital markets and sustainable infrastructure development, the MOFA added.
Established in 1991, EBRD assists countries in the transition to market-oriented economies and promotes private and entrepreneurial initiatives in Africa, Asia and Central and Eastern Europe. According to the MOFA, Taiwan has participated in multiple co-financing initiatives and contributed to over 400 of the bank’s technical cooperation projects.
