Deputy Foreign Minister Tien attends Pacific Island countries dialogue

2023/11/15

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tien Chung-kwang participated in the 28th Taiwan/Republic of China-Forum Countries Dialogue held by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat Nov. 10 in the Cook Islands, underscoring the government’s commitment to boosting ties with its Pacific allies and like-minded partners, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The dialogue is concurrent with the 52nd PIF Leaders Meeting, during which Tien held bilateral meetings with Taiwan’s Pacific allies, hosted a welcome banquet and engaged in bilateral talks with delegations from like-minded countries.

Taiwan has taken part in PIF events under the name Taiwan/ROC since 1993. This year’s dialogue was jointly hosted by Tuvalu Prime Minister Kausea Natano and PIF Deputy Secretary General Esala Nayasi, and attended by delegations from Palau, the Marshall Islands and Nauru.

In his speech at the dialogue, Tien said Taiwan has engaged in bilateral cooperation and multilateral initiatives with the PIF Secretariat that aligned with Pacific countries’ priority policies and with U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. Taiwan has long carried out projects across the Pacific in areas spanning agriculture, clean energy, education, information and communications technology, infrastructure, medical care, public health and women’s empowerment, and all of which have improved the well-being of people in the region, he added.

The government will continue to work with its Pacific allies, like-minded partners and the PIF to implement the forum’s 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, as well as advancing regional prosperity and sustainable development, Tien said.

The PIF Secretariat briefed participants on the strategy’s plans, current progress on Taiwan-PIF regional cooperation and priorities for the coming year, while praising Taiwan’s achievements in promoting development assistance programs in the region, the MOFA said.

All parties agreed to strengthen cooperation on issues such as climate change, maritime law enforcement and cultivating personnel, the MOFA said, adding that the ministry will extend collaboration in these domains and enhance partnerships with Pacific nations.
