Taiwan and the Czech Republic concluded a memorandum of understanding on helping Ukraine rebuild key infrastructure Nov. 10 via video conference, marking another milestone in the bilateral relationship, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Under the pact, the two sides will focus on water purification facilities and symbiotic energy systems, the MOFA said. The latter will improve the country’s energy efficiency and enable its people to survive the harsh winter temperatures, the ministry added.
The MOU was signed by Ke Liang-ruey, head of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague, and David Steinke, head of Czech Economic and Cultural Office Taipei. Deputy Foreign Minister Roy Chun Lee and Tomas Kopecny, Czech governmental envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine, were present in Taipei City to witness the event.
According to Lee, the accord is the first collaborative Ukraine aid project between the governments of Taiwan and Czechia. It demonstrates the commitment of the two like-minded partners to protect the Eastern European country’s sovereignty, he said, adding that Taiwan will continue to work with other democracies to support Ukraine.
Following his remarks, Kopecny said it is Ukraine’s firm determination to defend its territory that make other countries willing to help.
Olha Kulish, representative of Ukraine expatriates in Taiwan, expressed appreciation to the two governments. She noted that some water purification equipment is made in Taiwan and said she hopes that more such domestically made products can be sent to Ukraine.
Taiwan and the Czech Republic will advance Ukraine aid plans through the MOU while exploring further cooperation opportunities to uphold the value of mutual humanitarian assistance among democracies, the MOFA said.
