2023/11/10
A workshop on strengthening media literacy and recognizing misinformation and disinformation was staged for the first time in Palau under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework Nov. 3, underscoring the government’s commitment to sharing expertise with allies and like-minded partners.
The daylong event was jointly organized by the Embassy of the ROC (Taiwan) in the Republic of Palau, the U.S. Embassy in the Republic of Palau and the Pacific ally’s Ministry of State. It was attended by local officials and those from the embassies of Taiwan, Australia, Japan and the U.S., representatives of nongovernmental organizations, local media outlets, and community college staff and students.
Taiwan Ambassador Jessica Chien-yi Lee, Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. and U.S. Ambassador to Palau Joel Ehrendreich delivered opening remarks, with Palau Vice President J. Uduch Sengebau Senior giving a keynote speech. Taipei City-based Taiwan FactCheck Center senior journalist Chen Pei-huang and University of Hawaii professor Ann Auman also gave speeches and exchanged views with local media, the MOFA said, adding that the workshop demonstrated the importance of strengthening media literacy through public-private partnerships and international cooperation.
Launched in June 2015 by Taiwan and the U.S. as a platform for multilateral cooperation among like-minded partners, GCTF has hosted over 60 workshops on topics spanning energy cooperation, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, public health and women’s empowerment. Since 2021, GCTF-affiliated events have also been held outside the founding countries to deepen cooperation in Africa, Europe, South Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
