President Tsai Ing-wen said Nov. 7 that Taiwan is willing and able to work with more like-minded partners to jointly make advancements in fields such as biotechnology, environmental sustainability, medicine and technology to enhance global prosperity and development.
Tsai made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the Atlantic Council’s Millennium Leadership Program. Led by program Senior Director Jonah Fisher, the group from the Washington, D.C.-based think tank comprises 30 young leaders from 17 countries.
Taiwan’s transition to democracy was long and difficult, Tsai said. Amid the current challenges posed by authoritarian regimes, the country continues to bolster its self-defense capabilities, while working with Australia, Japan and the U.S. to promote the Global Cooperation and Training Framework and expand exchanges and cooperation with more countries, she added.
According to Tsai, Taiwan is leveraging its economic and industrial strengths to further deepen partnerships with Europe, the U.S. and other countries following the signing of the first agreement under the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st Century Trade and the passage of the European Chips Act.
The president also took the opportunity to thank the council for staunchly supporting cross-strait peace and sending delegations to Taiwan for two consecutive years.
In response, Fisher described Taiwan as a fantastic case study for global leadership, a focal point of the program, and praised Tsai for transforming the island into a symbol of resilience. The first female president in Taiwan played a key role in gaining the government entry into the World Trade Organization in 2002, he said, adding that the council will continue to build its partnership with Tsai and the people of Taiwan.
